Being supportive, and being supported, are two different people.  The supporter are usually.. optimistic.

And now I see how stupid I was when I told some of my friends after, during or before a job interview that everything's going to be alright.

Namely, Joyce, Kellyinyee, and a few more of my other friends OUTSIDE of Multiply.

Now I see, when some of them tend to get sad over.. a job that they really want.  How different can it be?

Oh well.  The same's happening to me.  2 days has passed, and tomorrow's the end of the average 3-day-grace call from the company I applied for.. sigh.. I really do they call soon, or I'll have to work somewhere else.. It's hard to find a place with a reasonably good pay..

My mum gave me a long lecture about taking my previous rabbit down to KL, saying that I won't have the time to take care of it, and it'll eventually.. die.

Unfortunately, she bought fishes 2 days ago, and this is the result today...

5 were dead this afternoon.  But the death toll increases as time passes.. Horrible.

This is not my first time seeing fishes dead, but this is my first time watching these fishes slowly die as time passes when I've done nothing but go online..

This is weird, but I pity these fishes, honestly.. And somehow, they effected my mood today to not progress a little bit more on the guitar when I planned to.. Everytime when my mum gets few new fishes.. They just.. die..

And yes, I've fed them.  But the food we have here doesn't really work.  Maybe they lack of oxygen or whatever filtered thing it is, I'm no aquarium expert..

.. Thank goodness I can feed myself..

ZZ Top song played by the G3 crew in 2005.. Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and John Pettruci in Tokyo..

I was thinking about it.. Looked through some pictures about how models tend to copy each other's makeup just to look nice.. Or to steal styles.. Whatever it is.

Then there are graphic designers who tends to study the artworks of others just to be like them; or blending the stolen styles with their own..

I reflected it upon myself; the styles of music.  The feel of melodies.  The creativity outbreaks.

I can't stop feeling this way even though I try as hard as I can to practice by trying to learn from others..  I just listened to Steve Vai's The Audience is Listening and .. mother fucker.. Such clean playing without mistakes..

Gah.. Not easy trying to be one of your idols.  What's even tougher is that you come up with your own style that nobody is able to take away from you..

Hmmm ... oh well.. no choice but to keep on walking down this musical journey...blindly.

It's been a long time since I last wrote my mind out on this.  Now would be the perfect time, I suppose.

I restricted myself from doing so because I thought I could handle things myself.  But every human needs love and affection; either from a person..Or whatever they wanted to do.

Unique individuals that I truly admire would be people like Edmund.  They don't need love and affection from the opposite (or the same) sex to move on.  It's their dreams, goals and surroundings that moves them.

Those are the unique ones I admire at times.  For people like me, whom I think is normal, we need the attention of the people around us.  Sometimes, a special individual that makes us feel all that butterflies in our stomach.

For me, I suppose it's over.  Being the over-devoted bastard that I am, I can't let go of her easily.  I would still want to be "Hey, I am your friend and I care for you so much still, yeah?".  Honestly, I think it's bullshit.  It's the worst move I admit, but I'm too stubborn to listen to my own words.

.. Or the advice of others in my case.

It's the high beliefs and all of these emotions I still manage to feel inside of me that restricts me to move on.  I want to.  I'm determined, but I can't do anything when cupid's arrow strikes me like a bullet being shot by an AK-47 held by Saddam Hussien's men.

It's experiences and situations like these that would make us stronger.  Although we might consider being 19 or 20 as a full grown adult, but in this game of love, I'm still a mere child.

And breaks were supposed to be a period of time where both partners require their own time alone.  But what use is that when the you, or the partner, starts going out with someone else that has already done something sweet for you before?

It's bullshit la.  If you're a Mathematician of any sort, here's a new equation.

Break = Break up

It'll never last once the break initiates.  And even you and your parnter tends to patch things up after the break, I congratulate you, but most of it'll never last long because of the past arguements you two had.

Anyways, I couldn't really take it anymore.  I ended up hurting myself when I tried to patch things up by myself.  My scenario was like; talking to a brick wall.  So even if I punched it out of hatred, I'd end up hurting myself in the end.

But right now, after receiving words of slight beliefs.. The question is, should I hold on?  Or end up hating her for a short period of time secretly until I'm strong enough to face her once again like what I've done before to others?  Decisions..decisions..

And I'm such a fool to think that the world revolves around a single individual instead of those that you've known before you got together with your partner.  A fool I have been, indeed, when I left everybody to a inexistent stage.. Secretly disappearing and so on.. Also, posting up journals that's understood by myself, and a minority of others just to divert attention..

I admit this is an emo blog post that many would despise.  But what can you do?  After all, I'm just human.

I'm confused beyond all existing reasons at the moment.

Listening To: Dido - Thank You

This is one helluva gay song.

Anyways, the life here isn't that bad.  Except that this is my 2nd month going overbudget when I'm supposed to be saving up money to get several items.  Instead of saving, I wasted my money on this Sonic Gear 2.1 speakers.. Not bad, but it kind of prooved a point that speakers like these aren't meant for mixing.

What I need would be those plugins to work for Vista.. Still waiting patiently for the patch if there's going to be any..

Vista's growing on my skin now.  So far, so good.  Just a little bit of tweeks here and there would just make some programmes work, whereas the majority would still be incompatible.

Now, as for Panic Overdrive.. I mean, Six String Samurais, we appeared on the papers twice.. And I couldn't get my hands on those papers twice.  Damn it.  Once was on The Star's R.AGE which is only available to schools and colleges .. The other one is today.. The Sun..also the same, only available to schools and colleges.  Thanks to Ying Kit, I happened to get the soft copy of it .. Not bad.  Nice write up .. Thanks Cheryl Dunn!

On the other hand, the two rabbits aren't getting along well.  Pypy's just bullying the new lop ear rabbit .. And there's no way to calm her down because I just found out that rabbits are  territorial animals.. So, living together's just about impossible.  And because of Pypy's age at the moment, she's supposed to be spayed, but I don't think any vets here would be able to do that and calm her raging hormones down (literally).

Besides that, Joshua is practising with the metronome to record the drums again this weekend in Gombak.  A studio somewhere near Wangsa Maju area.. And when we checked it out, we were amazed.  There were 2 drum sets there.  One was a normal Yamaha maple custom stage set..And the other one was fully custom-picked.

Not custom made, but custom-picked.  I knew it.  I looked at the tom toms, it only belonged to one drummer that I know of.. Using tomtoms the size as toilet rolls .. Lewis Pragassam .. Bloody hell ..

And for drums recording,it's pretty cheap.  RM 65 per hour..same goes for vocals. .And guitars would be RM55 .. Which would mean that I will be able to test out my new found.. theory.

Oh well. .besides that, I'm doomed for this semester.. I hate macroeconomics.. it's a pile of bullshit.

I'm off.. I've got nothing else to say at the moment.. Except that the food here in Kuala Lumpur sucks.. Gah ..

I miss FDM all of a sudden .. I guess things can very much change ..

In that dream, I'll be walking out your door.
Now, I know you deserve so much more than this ..
I can be in your dreams tonight..
Can be ......

I'm reviewing whatever I'm doing socially at the moment.  It seems like as if I've lost everybody mainly because of my own attitude.  Not to say that I treat them badly, but I don't feel like socialising so much these days.  No idea why.

Well, it depends.  Especially this last minute trip back to Penang without my parents (and many of you) knowledge, I just want to relax after the days of subjects that I despise of in KDU PJ.  And taking only 3 subjects is pretty light, which frustrates me, and it makes me feel depressed.

I should take up a job in Starbucks or in that music shop at The Curve since it's close by my area..

The old influences are coming back to me; the ones that made me "a little bit" violent back in form 3.. I keep hearing the repeated verses and choruses to Metallica, Slipknot, In Flames and Children of Bodom for no reason.. Those heavy riffs..The angry lyrics.. And all that hatred..

I've got no idea what's coming up me.

All I know it's affecting my guitar in terms of theory and recording.  My next project would be to test out 12 layers of distorted rhythm guitar of different distortions in a studio (which is going to be costly for the band) for the song Better Than This.  Your typical emo-rock ballad commercial song.  The drums sounds sweet, but the same problem exist.. Joshua keeps going out of tempo, but at least he improved a lot since the first time I met him ..

Harmonising with Ying Kit on the solo for Better Than This is going to be fun.. But what's going to be more challenging would be the rhythm.  Anybody can play lead if they practice hard enough.  But certain rhythmic skills require a lot of concentration.  Example, for the pinch harmonics of the 7th fret of the 5th (A) string, is..well, somewhere around there.  A photographic memory would be require to achieve the right note.

Or it'll seriously sound out of scale.

Maybe there's no secret to pinch harmonics.. It's all in the right hand picking and positioning across the body of the guitar..

And just a few days ago, I managed to pull off an accidental pinch/artificial harmonic with the palm.  Seems like an interesting skill, but takes a few milliseconds..

.. Whatever.

Anyways, I went to Borders to check out Guitar Grimoire, and I felt like a kindergarten student trying to learn how to read and write.  I didn't understand the terms being used in the book, but it comes with a DVD (I think) that teaches you to understand the terms a little bit better... Which I've already downloaded off the net, but it's useless without the book.  It's about RM111.90 .. Reasonable for a thick textbook.  Plus there's so many secrets in it..

Besides that, I'm still trying to figure out the Pitch Axis Theory..

.. And RM65 for vocals and drum recording is kind of cheap in Kuala Lumpur.  The band (or more specifically - Joshua) found a studio which is owned by a very talented jazz bassist, Rikki Omar.  If my memory doesn't serve me wrong, he plays in the same jazz group with Lewis Pragasam during the annual Penang Jazz Festival.

And I managed to lay my eyes on Lewis Pragasam's drum set in the studio .. Odd setting, but very cute sound.. Of course, I didn't dare touch it since everything looked..custom made.

But hey!  Guitar recording is only at RM 55.. Which is kind of odd as I always expected KL studios to be more expensive.  Besides that, we don't record Audition for vocals unlike in Penang.. This time, it's Pro Tools..

And unlike KDU PG, it's updated.  Lol

And sch-wweeeeeeeeeeeet... There's so many things you can do with Pro Tools.

Okay.. I'm off.. I gotta do my crappy form 3 mathematics tutorials since I overslept on Friday ..

Listening To: Joe Satriani - Ten Words

I switched on my MSN today, and I received an email from my former facilitator and friend from church, entitled "Prayers for Anthony".

I thought he got promoted or something nice happened to him.  But then again, the email wrote:

"Was just told by Jefrey that Anthony, who used to play the bass for YP, has passed away knocked down in a car accident.

While waiting for confirmation of this news, please pray for him/his soul.

Best regards

Catherine

Wait on the Lord; be of good courage

and He will strengthen your heart

Psalm 27:14"

Back in 2004, I played with Anthony, who was a very good bassist, and was slightly motivated by him to continue my musical studies because of him.  Also, he was the only rebellious musician in the praise and worship group that we were in.  Until I joined, he had someone to rebel with when it comes to playing music - until the point that we received several complaints from the parish priest himself.  Not once, but several times too.

He was also a schoolmate of Kelvyn Yeang, but more to a senior.  He didn't really know Kelvyn Yeang back then, but all he knew was that during that point, it was the time where a lot of people doubted Kelvyn would get to the stage where he would be today.

Of course, playing musical instrument is not about practice, but it's about practising with a band.  This praise and worship group that I was in was one of those critical points that improved me on my guitar "career".

He left for his job in KL somewhere in 2005 and things weren't the same.  After he left, things weren't the same anymore.  I left soon after that due to studies.

I'm still shocked that I received this email regarding this tragic news.. He was like a brother to me back when he was in Penang..

Rest In Peace, Anthony "The Bassman" Issac.

Sigh.  May God bless your soul up there..............

Listening To: Ocean of Fire - X'Mas Meddley

Of course it's a little bit too early to bounce along with this song because Christmas is about 3 months away.  But this piece is definitely a piece of art.  I remember that all of us in the Equator gig were stunned by his performance.  Truly something really special, and of course,it fit the season.

Hahaha.. Jingle bell rock.. HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH..damn cute la.

Anyways, ever since I left Penang and started listening to nothing but Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and now, Ocean of Fire, I never put guitars in my mind ever again - until recently, finding out that I can never play as well as I used to 2 years ago, and now, I have the only reason to be depressed.

Listening to this album, watching the band on Youtube.com really motivates me to pick up the guitar.  Earlier on, I was taking on the main structure of Joe Satriani's Ten Words.  And I have to start back on the basics - playing it really clean.  The only way for me to practice on clean playing would be playing the guitar itself.  No gadgets, no amplifiers (like as if I have one).  Just a pick, a guitar with 6 strings, basic scales, and that's it.  I'm tired of jamming with the band finding that my soloes are usually out of timing and exceeding the bars.

Just like everything else, practical is different than theory.  I feel that my theory is expanding more than whatever I play.  So it's about time to fuse those two once again.  The last time I fused a very simple theory was the very first time I recorded A Night In The Sky under FDM.  It was fairly simple.  Play the Dmaj scale until you get sick of it, hit the flat 7th note and give it a full bend to hit the original key of the song but sticking with the same scale but on 3 semitones higher - the Dm/Fmaj scale to add in more flavour.

Undoubtedly, that was my greatest achievement because I went back into the Dmaj scale, but I figured that was child's play.  Now, I'm onto modes - Lydian and Docrian modes.  The sort of modes that would save my ass when I'm playing both minor and major scales.  And the Lydian scale is very simple, suprisingly.  It works a few times.  And no wonder Fragments of Beliefs sounds so different than whatever I've done so far.

Soon, I shall complete Fragments of Beliefs .. After I do Ying Kit's song, and drum programming for a friend's epic/heavy metal song.. Sweet.

Besides all that, I've agreed to stay home and play the guitar on a daily basis!  A week's training without effects should be enough for that video interview now.  Let's see what I can cook up ..

... Of course this is a very stupid thing to be depressed about, but what do you know, anyways?  Not many would understand..

Of course, before I forget, credits goes out to a certain half-wimmin by the name of Aaron Lim (a.k.a. Kelvyn Yeang's cousin also..Lol) for being my bitch-post when it came to mounting *.img and *.ccd images to a CD for autoplay installation purposes after it's being downloaded via torrent.  I thought it would be easily done with Nero, but since I have Vista, I believe all of you are able to guess why I couldn't mount the image via Nero.  Or let alone, have a successful Nero installation process.

Instead, I downloaded Alcohol 120%.

It's been nearly 13 or 14 hours in total that I've been working along with the command prompt (MS-Dos), several compatibility tools straight off from Microsoft and nothing prevails.

Everything that I've tried and put an effort into still doesn't work ..

But then again, there must be a key that I'm missing of .. It's impossible for most programmes to not work on Microsoft Vista, isn't it?  Unless if you're telling me that some programmes work for Vista Basic, most programmes work for Vista Premium and all the programmes work in Vista Ultimate, then I'm going to be so pissed.

Why couldn't Microsoft just halt all of their updates at XP, not be jealous and let Apple and Mac rule the world instead of creating a new GUI which eats probably 500% more resources compared to what Mac is taking up on their computers and laptops.

It must work... It mustttttttttttttttttttttt ....................................................................

There's only one more shot I have, and it's the last.  After that, I will avoid all 16bit programmes.  I won't also believe in the fact that there's a way to convert a 16 bit DOS programme into a working 32 bit programme... Buh..Computer talk.. I'd better go read some Asterix now

They're only better when you're not slapped with shit work.  Not exactly shit work.  The work's nice, but the problem is.. The boss.

It's her once again, if you all would know who I'm talking about.  Nothing but.. The pre-World War II traditional Chinese women's attitude.  I suppose I'll be working at the PWMF, and I never even made my own decision.

Sigh.

Talk about trying to enjoy what I've been through.  For the past few days, I've been doing nothing but studying.  No outings, no driving, no guitar-ing, no music-ing, but just.. studies.  And thanks to all of that effort, I did better than I expected .. At least I didn't leave anything blank in any papers (except for Company Law..)

Company Law was dope.  Me and my 2 other classmates went to my classmate's house, and wanted to study Company Law.  Since it came right after our Microeconomics exam, we only had 3 hours to prepare.  But by the time we travelled and had lunch, we had only 2 hours to go.  Half an hour later, I gave up and decided to take some rest because I only had 3 hours of sleep the day before.. Due to Microeconomics..

When I woke up 20 minutes before the examination, I saw everybody was dead asleep.  LOL.  There goes our Company Law Finals.. Nobody studied in the end.  lol

I've been staying up till 5am these mornings due to examinations.. I can't believe myself that I was actually studying.  Good cause, I suppose?  I hope the same would go on when I'm in KL.

But then again, I hope not.  Because this morning, I slept at 5am, I nearly missed my Business Statistics papers.  I woke up at 9.20am when the paper started at 9am.. Bloody Hell ..

Buh.

And my rabbit's not doing any better.. sigh.

But on the brighter side, my dad's getting me a laptop soon enough.  Sending my brother to source out a laptop was definitely a bad idea, but then again, I'm lazy to do my own research.  He came up with the HP dv2300t .. Somewhat related to the dv2500t that I could find a review on.. It's not bad.. But the only downfall would be that it comes with Windows Vista.

Again, comes the headache of programme compabilities.. Sigh..

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3721&review=HP+Pavilion+dv2500t

Besides that, I just started reading about VST plugins that can be used on DAWs.  Credits to Ddie and Wormy when it comes to this.. I just bought Cubase, and I've got no idea what the hell it is.  I'll test it out only when the laptop comes in.  I bought the Cubase programme was because it came with its plugins.. and Xpansion BFD XD

BFDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!  <3

And I heard that Reason 3.0 has some minor problems with Windows Vista.. Coming from Aaron Wimmin Lim.

But Audition 1.5 works fine.. Should I update it to 2.0?  Looks somewhat like Protools..

buh..

Listening to Point Blanc's Straight To The Point made me realise that a DAW's not good enough for standalone mixing.  It needs to be supported by plugins..

Buh..................

How to find Waves Platinum..Prangin Mall tadak... tomorrow's a trip to midlands then..

.. Fuckin' Penang World Music Festival.. It just ruined my whole weekend plan to rest -_-.  At least Ah Hui and I will be working under the same boss..and will be bitching about the same boss.. Now he feels my pain after supporting.. The Boss.  Eng kai.. hahahaha..

CHAPTER 2

The Demand Curve

“When the price of a good rises, the quantity demanded will fall.”

The law of demand1.

E.g. If coffee prices increase, you will either cut down on the amount of coffee you drink, or you might give up drinking coffee instead.

Key structure in above example:  Increase of price, demand will be less.  Decrease of price, demand will be more.

The law of demand has 2 reasons:

  • People will feel poorer.  They will not be able to afford to buy so much of the good with their money.  The purchasing power of their income (their real income) has fallen.  This is called the income effect2 of a price rise.

  • With problems stated above, the market will seek and switch to alternative of ‘substitute’ goods.  This is called the substitution effect3 of a price rise.

E.g. we will drink more tea, cocoa, fruit juices or even water instead.

But when the price of a good falls, the quantity demanded will rise.  More people are able to afford to buy more (the income effect), and they will switch away from consuming alternative goods (the substitution effect).

Other determinants of demand

Price is not the only factor that affects the amount of goods being purchased by the market.  Market demand can also be affected by the following:

  • Tastes

The more desirable find the good, the more they will demand.  Tastes are affected by advertising, fashion, observing other consumers, considerations of health and the experiences from consuming the good on previous occasions.

  • The number and price of substitute goods4/competitive goods

The higher the price of substitute goods, the higher will be the demand for this good as people switch from the substitutes.  For example, the demand for coffee will depend on the price of tea.  If tea goes up in price, the demand for coffee will rise.

  • The number and price of complementary goods

Complementary goods5 are those that are consumed together:

·         Car and petrol

·         CDs and CD players

·         Computer and printers

The higher price for completmentary goods, the fewer of them will be bought and hence the less will be demanded for this good.

E.g. The demand for electricity will depend on the price of electrical goods.  If the price of electrical goods goes up, so that fewer are bought, the demand for electricity will fall.

  • Income

As people incomes rise, their demand for most goods will rise.  Such goods are called normal goods6.  There are exceptions to this general rule, however.  As people get richer, they spend less on inferior goods7, such as cheap margarine and switch to better quality margarine.

  • Distribution of income

If national income were redistributed from the poor to the rich, the demand for luxury goods would rise.  At the same time, as the poor got poorer they might have tot urn to buying inferior goods, whose demand thus rise too.

  • Expectations of future price changes

If people think that prices are going to rise in the future, they are likely to buy more now before the prices increase.

Examples for the above 6 determinants:

Tastes:  If butter is heavily advertised, demand is likely to rise.  If, on the other hand, there is a cholesterol scare, people may demand less for health reasons.

Substitutes: If the price of margarine goes up, the demand for butter is likely to rise as people switch from one to another.

Complements:  If the price of bread goes up, people will buy less bread and hence less butter to spread on it.

Income:  If people’s income rises, they may well turn to consuming butter rather than margarine, or feel that they can afford to spread butter more thickly on their bread.

Income distribution:  If income is redistributed away from the poor, they may have to give up consuming butter and bu cheaper margarine instead, or simply buy less butter and use it more sparingly.

Expectations:  If it is announced in the news that butter prices are expected to rise in the near future, people are likely to buy more now and stock up their freezers while current prices last.

Movements along and shits in the demand curve

If a change in one of the other determinants causes demand to rise – say, income rises – the whole curve will shift to the right.  This shows that each price more will be demanded than before.  But, if a change in a determinant other than price causes demand to fall, the whole curve will shift to the left.

It is usual to distinguish between a change in demand and a change in quantity demanded.  A sift in demand is referred to as a change in demand8, whereas a movement along the demand curve as a result of a change in price Is referred to as a change in the quantity demanded9.

The Supply Curve

“When the price of a good rises, the quantity supplied will also rise.”

  • As firms supply more, they are likely to find that beyond a certain level of output costs rise more and more rapidly.

  • The higher price of the good, the more profitable it becomes to produce.  Firms will thus be encouraged to produce more of it by switching from the production of less profitable goods.

  • Given time, if the price of a good remains high, new producers will be encourages to set up in production.  Total market supply thus rises.

Other determinants of supply

Like demand, supply is not determined by price.  The other determinants of supple are as follows:

  • The costs of production

The higher the costs of production, the lesser the profit.  As costs rise, firms will cut back on production, probably switching to alternative products whose costs have not risen so much.   The main reasons for a change in costs are:

·         Change in input prices:  Costs of production will rise if wages, raw material prices, rents, interest rates or any other input prices rise.

·         Change in technology:  technological advances can fundamentally alter the costs of production.
E.g. How the microchip revolution has changed the production methods and information handling in virtually every industry in the world.

·         Organisational changes:  Various cost savings can be made in many firms by reorganizing production.

·         Government policy:  Costs will be lowered by government subsidies and raised by various taxes.

  • The profitability of alternative products (substitutes in supply)

If some alternative product (a substitute in supply10) becomes more profitable to supply than before, producers are likely to switch from the first good to this alternative.  Supply of the first good falls.  Other goods are likely to become more profitable if:

·         Their prices rise

·         Their costs of production fall.

E.g.  If the price of carrots goes up, or the cost of producing carrots comes down, farmers may decide to produce more carrots.  The supply of potatoes is likely to fall.

  • The profitability of goods in joint supply

Sometimes when one good is produced, another good is also produced at the same time.  These are said to be goods in the joint supply11.

E.g.  Refining of crude oil to produce petrol will also produce other graded petrol such as diesel and paraffin.  If more petrol is produced, due to a rise in demand, then the supply of these other fuels will rise too.

  • Nature, ‘random shocks’ and other unpredictable events

In this category we would include the weather and diseases affecting farm output, wars affecting the supply of imported raw materials, the breakdown of machinery, industrial disputes, earthquakes, floods and fire, and so on.

  • The aims of producers

A profit maximising firm will supply a different quantity from a firm that has a different aim, such as maximising sales.  For most of the time we shall assume that firms are profit maximisers.

  • Expectations of future price changes

If prices are expected to rise, producers may temporarily reduce the amount they sell.  Instead they are likely to build up their stocks and release them onto the market only when the price does rise.  At the same time they may plan to produce more, by installing the new machines or taking on more labour, so that they can be ready to supply more when the price has risen.

To illustrate some of these determinants, the example of butter will be used:

Reduction in the costs of producing butter:  Reducing of the cost in nitrogen fertiliser will encourage farmers to use more fertiliser, which would increase grass yields, which in turn would increase milk yields per hectare.  Alternatively, new technology may allow more efficient churning of butter.  Or again, the government may decide to give subsidies to farmers to produce more butter.

Reduction in the profitability of producing cream or cheese:  If these products become less profitable, due say to a reduction in their price, due to turn to a reduction in consumer demand, more butter is likely to be produced instead.

An increase of profit of skimmed milk:  If consumers buy more skimmed milk, then an increased supply of skimmed milk is likely to lead an increase in the supply of butter and other cream products, since they are jointly produced with skimmed milk.

If weather conditions are favourable:  Grass yields and hence milk yields are likely to be high as it will increase the supply of butter and other milk products.

If produces expect butter prices to rise in the future, they may well decide to release less onto the market now and put more into the frozen storage until the price does rise.

Movements along and shifts in the supply curve

“A rightward shift illustrates an increase in supply.  A leftward shift illustrates a decrease in supply.”

A movement along a supply curve is often referred to as a change in the quantity supplied12, whereas a shift in the supply curve is simply referred to as a change in supply13.

The determination of price

The determination of price in the supply and the demand curve is through the equilibrium price14 where demand equals supply.  When the demand matches the supply, the market is said to clear (market clearing15).  Equilibrium16 in where the two curves intersect.

Example graphs:

At any price above the intersects’ price, the producer will experience a surplus:

And setting any price below the equilibrium price, will lead producers to a shortage problem:

A shift in one curve leads to a movement along the other curve to the new intersection point:

Keywords

The law of demand1

The quantity of a good demanded per period of time will fall as price rises and will rise as price falls, other things being equal.

Income effect2

The effect of a change in price on quantity demanded arising from the consumer becoming better or worse off as a result of the price change.

Substitution effect3

The effect of a change in price on quantity demanded arising from the consumer switching to or from alternative (substitute) products.

Demand curve

A graph showing the relationship between the price of a good and the quantity of the good demanded over a given time period.  Price is measured on the vertical axis; quantity demanded is measured on the horizontal axis.  A demand curve can be for an individual consumer or group of consumers, or more usually for the whole market.

Substitute goods4

A pair of goods which are considered by consumers to be alternatives to each other.  As the price of one goes up, the demand for the other rises.

Complementary goods5

A pair of goods consumed together.  As the price of one goes up, the demand for both goods will fall.

Normal goods6

Goods whose demand increases as consumer incomes increase.  They have a positive income elasticity of demand.  Luxury goods will have a higher income elasticity of demand than more basic goods.

Inferior goods7

Goods whose demand decreases as consumer incomes increase.  Such goods have a negative income elasticity of demand.

Change in demand8

The term used for a shift in the demand curve.  It occurs when a determinant of demand other than price changes.

Change in the quantity demanded9

The term used for a movement along the demand curve to a new point.  It occurs when there is a change in price.

Substitutes in supply10

These are two goods where an increased production of one means diverting resources away from producing the other.

Goods in joint supply11

These are two goods where the production of more of one leads to the production of more of the other.

Change in the quantity supplied12

The term used for a movement along the supply curve to a new point.  It occurs when there is a change in price.

Change in supply13

The term used for a shift in the supply curve.  It occurs when a determinant other than price changes.
